Dylan Kerr was involved in the build up to both the first Leeds goals. In the nineteenth minute it was his long diagonal pass from the left into the box that allowed John Pearson to rise and direct his header beyond the reach of the home goalkeeper. Then six minutes into the second half, he was involved in some neat play down the left before his low centre found Carl Shutt who hit a crisp first time shot inside the keeper's right post. Darren Edmonds replaced Left Half Peter Haddock in the fifty-fourth minute. The Leeds third goal came in the sixty-seventh minute. It started with Simon Grayson being fouled just outside and to the left of the Newcastle penalty area. Gary Williams took the free-kick and a towering leap from Noel Blake saw him place his header direct on target, as he was about to celebrate his goal, the ball hit Kevin Noteman almost on the line and consequently the striker climed the final touch and the Leeds third and final goal. Vince Hilaire replaced Right Back Gary Williams after seventy-one minutes and two minutes later Leeds made a double substitution when Ronnie Sinclair replaced Neil Edwards in goal and Peter Maguire replaced Right Half Simon Grayson. Russell Wigley replaced Kevin Noteman at Outside Left after eighty-three minutes. Tony Smart was the Leeds unused substitute.
